Gare Maritime

Innovative work, retail and events site

More information about

Former freight train station converted into covered mini city. It is energy neutral and combines work, shopping and events.

A unique place: attractive, inspiring and ambitious

This former railway station, in service until the 1980s, is 280 m long, 140 m wide and 24 m high. It now houses 12 wooden pavilions intended to be used as workspaces, shops and event venues. The pavilions and the transverse staircases consist of 10,000 m3 of wood, making this Europe’s biggest wooden project. The various spaces are arranged around a spectacular central aisle bathed in light, comprising ten themed gardens and intended for public events.

The Gare Maritime, strategically located along the canal and very near the North station and the historic centre of Brussels, is next to the following places:

  • Hôtel des Douanes : Offices
  • Sheds : large-scale events
  • Maison de la Poste :Conference and meeting centre
  • Royal Depot :food, hammam, furniture and decoration, shops, hair stylist, daycare centre, etc.
  • Tour & Taxis Park with its new ponds
  • KANAL Centre Pompidou museum
  • Suzan Daniel Bridge
  • Public transport

Sustainability profile

  • ‘BREEAM Outstanding’ certification
  • Glass façades with solar cells
  • Solar panels
  • Geothermal heating and cooling
  • Natural ventilation
  • Halio glazing
  • Rainwater collection
  • CLT & FSC wood

The renovation orchestrated by Nextensa is exemplary from the point of view of sustainability. Most of the historic elements have been renovated or reused, the new construction blocks are in wood and the roof holds solar panels covering 17,000 sqm, the largest solar panel area installed in the Brussels-Capital Region since 2013. This comprises a total of 9,750 solar panels which will generate three million kWh of green electricity per year.

The project won the ‘Europa Nostra’ award in the ‘Conservation’ category, presented in recognition of remarkable achievements in conservation, highlighting cultural heritage and adapting it for new uses.
